Vendor Spotlight – The Poppy Seed Cake Baking Co.

The Poppyseed Cake Baking Co. is a company in the industry that is near and dear to my heart for a few different reasons. It is owned and operated by mother/daughter team, Deanie & Katie Willis. Katie and I went to high school together and Deanie was constantly cooking and baking for us. In fact, I remember a few times when we surprised her and she still was able to whip up something truly delicious. I also had Deanie cater my mom’s 50th birthday party and she made the most heavenly chocolate birthday cake I’ve ever tasted. Learn a little bit more about The Poppyseed Cake Baking Co. and the hearts behind the business below…

1.) What made you start The Poppyseed Cake Baking Co.?
My hairdresser began telling me, about five years ago, that I should start selling my cookies. This came from her Christmas present, from me, that was always several different kinds of cookies I had baked. She loved my cookies! Then, I owned a Cafe/Retail business for three years. After that, one thing led to another, and I began baking desserts for a bistro in Denton that my hairdresser owned. Thus, the start of The Poppyseed Cake Baking Co.
2.) What is one of your favorite cakes you’ve ever made?
One of my all time favorite cakes I’ve ever made is the first wedding cake we did. It was kind of on a whim for a friend of Katie’s. We had no idea what we were getting in to but loved every second of it! Now, many wedding cakes later, we look back on that cake and laugh at how little we actually knew! But we had a blast anyways.
3.) What are some of your other hobbies?
Well, before the start of this business I would definitely have considered cooking and baking my main hobby! That has just become my job now as well! I have always loved music, and enjoy playing the piano whenever I get the chance. I also dabble in guitar, organ, and the fiddle.
4.) What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is knowing that people enjoy what we do and making people happy. There is no greater joy!
5.) Do you have a preferred style?
We definitely err on the side of traditional and southern. If it has anything to do with sweet tea or front porch sittin’, we’re in! We believe in the classics; the tried and true originals.
6.) What would you like readers to know about you?
Our desire at The Poppyseed Cake is to bake awesome goodies from scratch. We use only the finest ingredients like real sweet cream butter, the freshest eggs, pure cane sugar, just to name a few. We want everyone to enjoy fresh baked pies, cakes, cookies and lots more. To be able to nourish others through food is one of life’s greatest gifts. We simply want you to have the best we can offer.
I have to say at this point that The Poppyseed Cake has become a mom and daughter affair. My daughter Katie and I have been working side by side, and our passion for baking and cooking is taking center stage. We love working together and at some point in the near future plan to have a storefront.  Katie loves to cook and I love to bake, but we are coming together to form a great business with not only a bakery but also catering.
